Vulcanis was born in a a desert (Death Valley, perhaps) to a female named Flamesong, along with his smaller brother, Sora, and his larger brother, Kaen. Their father had been killed in a dispute of some sort not long before they were born. Their mother raised them to be strong, honest, and brave.

When the brothers were old enough, they left home to make it on their own. For a while, everything was okay: they were happy and healthy, and wanted for nothing. But the sun ever sets.

Sora was the smartest brother, the smooth-talker. He was also the weakest, though, and one day while his brothers were out, he was murdered by some no-good coyotes. They left fur and bones. When vulcanis and Kaen returned, they were crushed. They buried their brother, and then moped for weeks, not eating, barely drinking.

Finally, though, something clicked in Vulcanis's head, and he snapped himself and his brother out of their funk. They said goodbye to their brother Sora at his grave, and left to wander on.

As it turned out, however, Sora had been the knot holding the two together. without their delicate brother's mediating words, the two clashed constantly, and finally they separated, Vulcanis heading east, and Kaen heading north. They bid each other farewell and safety, and never saw one another again.

Vulcanis has been wandering for a while now, stopping here and there to make friends (or enemies), to see sights, and to stir up trouble. He has no children (that he knows of), and that is a problem in his mind, since his litter was his parents' last. With one of his brothers already dead for sure, and with Kane an unknown, Vulcanis's greatest fear, truth be told, would be dying before passing on his genes to a new generation.
